Overview

VOShoppingList allows you to keep track over time of what you need to buy, then displays the items in an easy to use list for you to check them off.

Categories

Items can be grouped into one or more categories in the item details box. On the main display, you can select which category of items you want to view.

Categories can be types of items such as "Grocery" or "Medicine", or you can use categories to track particular stores.

Adding and removing categories is done in the item details window. To add a category, click on the "New Category" text and change the name to the new category. To remove a category, simply erase its name and it will be removed from the list.

Item Chooser

The item chooser allows you to add multiple items to your list quickly, based on all of the items in the selected Category. To return to normal mode, click on the item chooser (checkbox) icon in the toolbar when you are finished.

In chooser mode, you will be shown all of the items in your list history, along with some default items that are created when you first run VOShoppingList. Items currently "needed" are drawn in one color, while items currently "not needed" are drawn in another color. You can toggle an item between "needed" and "not needed" by clicking on the name of the item.

To increase the quantity needed of a particular item, click to the right of the quantity shown. To decrease the quantity needed of a particular item, click to the left of the quantity shown. To quickly bring the quantity to 0 and flag it as "not needed", just click on the name of the item.

In chooser mode, the price shown is always the price for a single item, regardless of the quantity value. Clicking on the price of an item will display the item details.

Adding List Items

The easiest way to add items to your list is to use "Chooser Mode" by clicking the checkbox icon on the toolbar. This allows you to add multiple items very quickly.

To add a single item to your list, either click on an empty line in the list (below the last item in the list) or select List...Add Item from the menu.

Enter the name of the item in the name edit box, the quantity, the price and the unit of measurement. Everything except the name is optional. You can also select which categories the item belongs to.

If the item has previously been entered, its price and unit of measurement will be entered automatically when the name is selected from the drop down list.

When the item is added to the list, it's price and unit of measurement is remembered.

Editing List Items

Once an item has been added to the list, you can check it off the list by clicking on its description. The item will be crossed out, and its total added to the "purchased total" at the bottom of the list.

To modify the quantity or the price of an item, just click on the quantity number or the price, and the edit item dialog will appear with the cursor in the edit field corresponding to what you clicked on.

To toggle the coupon icon, click just to the left of the price for the item.

Changing Fonts

You can customize the fonts to be used for each portion of the list (quantity, description and price) by selecting Tools...Fonts from the menu.

Changing the fonts for the application will not cause the changes to be saved. To save the fonts for future sessions, select Tools...Save Preferences from the menu.

Changing Colors

You can customize the colors to be used for each portion of the list (paper colors, quantity, description and price) by selecting Tools...Colors from the menu.

Changing the colors for the application will not cause the changes to be saved. To save the colors for future sessions, select Tools...Save Preferences from the menu.

Hardware Buttons

The buttons on the toolbar are as follows:

  • Chooser Button - Toggle between "Items Needed" and "Item Chooser" modes
  • AZ Button - Sort the items in the list
  • Previous Page - Move up in the list one page at a time
  • Next Page - Move down in the list one page at a time

  • Registering VOShoppingList

VOShoppingList uses AdWare, which pays for the application with money from advertisers and displays the advertisers' ads when the application is first run. You will only see one ad for about 7 seconds each time you run the application, like a trailer ad before a movie starts. If you want more information about an advertised product, just click on the "Click here for more" icon at the bottom of the ad.

You can optionally register the application at http://www.voscorp.com/asp/win/VOShoppingList for $14.95 (US Funds). Registering the application prevents the advertisements from being displayed when the application is run. Once you have received your registration code, click on the key in the lower right while an advertisement is displayed to enter the code.

    Recipes - PocketCook Integration

If you have The Electronic Frontier's Pocket Cook (SE or Deluxe version) installed, you can now view the shopping list items from Pocket Cook in VOShoppingList. Items from the Pocket Cook shopping list database are displayed with a small chef's hat icon to the left of the description.

To set the Categories to display recipe based items in, you can either edit one of the recipe items (by clicking on its price) or by adding a new item, selecting "Pocket Cook" as the item name, then selecting the categories from the list at the bottom of the window. All recipe items are displayed in the selected categories.

When viewing a recipe in Pocket Cook, simply click on an ingredient to add it to your list. When purchased items are removed from the list, any Pocket Cook items purchased are also removed from the Pocket Cook internal shopping list.
